Summary:
An operating plan (a.k.a. operations plan) is
used for two main reasons:
1) The operating plan provides the financial model for your business idea.
The operating plan allows you to financially model your business over several
periods so that you can assess cash needs, human capital needs, revenues, etc.
and see if your business idea even makes sense.
2) After you decide to move forward with your business idea the operating
plan becomes a dynamic document that you use to measure your progress in
relation to plan that can also be changed as the business changes.
This "Advanced" operations plan relies heavily on excel formulas, all of
which are included in the spreadsheet but an intermediate knowledge of Excel or
above would be a plus. Data in this operating plan is largely based on
assumptions that are easily changeable for modeling purposes; for instance you
could see your entire forecast change by changing the growth rate from 15% per
year to 20% by simply changing just that one input and having the rest of the
plan automatically change.
